Daniel stepped through the French doors to the backyard,

seeing Titus sitting in a chair, sipping wine and watching the

shadows darken with night’s approach. The yard wasn’t overly

large, but still a fine luxury for being in the heart of the city. A

wooden privacy fence wrapped around the perimeter, hydrangea

and lilac bushes lined it. Though the lilacs had long since lost

their blossoms, the hydrangea still held a few flowers of pink,

lavender, and blue. Chopin’s Nocturne, Opus 9 No. 2, played softly

from speakers connected to the stereo system in the house.

Daniel stood behind Titus’s chair and let out a sigh. “I love

this piece.”

Titus smiled over his shoulder at him. “And you play it

beautifully.”

Daniel rested his hands on Titus’s shoulders and began

rubbing them. “Ah, well, I had a good mentor, and for more

things than just music.”

Titus groaned softly in pleasure. “I did the best I could, but

for things like music, I only laid the foundation. Your talent and

other instructors lifted your skills to heaven, but I can’t remember

the last time I heard you play piano, violin, anything.”

“I do when I’m home and I’m bored or lonely.”

“I don’t like hearing you get lonely.”

“It’s not the first time I’ve said it. I’ve been telling you since

you left.”

“But it doesn’t have to be that way. You could find someone—”

“I have someone.” Daniel stopped rubbing Titus’s shoulders

and embraced him around the neck, resting his cheek on Titus’s

head.

“Daniel…”

“No, listen to me.” Daniel released him to step around the

chair. He knelt in front of him, placing his hands on Titus’s thighs

as he met his gaze. “I can accept you not wanting me for a lover

anymore. If Andreas is who you want now, I won’t interfere, I

promise, and you know I’m good by my word. Just please, let me

live with you again. I only want to be part of your life.”

“You’ll always be part of my life, but you’re long overdue for

making a life on your own.”

Daniel gazed at him for a moment and then pushed hard off

Titus’s thighs as he stood up. He paced to the end of the brick

patio and stopped, his back to Titus. “This is because of Andreas,

isn’t it? You’re pushing me away because of him.”

“No, it’s not, and you know that. I’m not telling you anything

new. It’s time for you to stop clinging to me and stand on your

own.”

“What is it about him, anyway? I’ll give you he’s attractive, but

it has to be more. Is he that good of a fuck to have you wrapped

around his finger?”

“I’m not wrapped around anyone’s finger, and I think you

know me better than to think sex can persuade me.”

Daniel stood quiet for a few moments. He spoke, his voice

barely audible. “He reminds you of him, doesn’t he?”

Titus took another sip of wine. “Some traits are similar,

but it’s not like I haven’t run into other people with those traits

before. Andreas is his own person, and that’s how I look at him.”

Daniel faced him, folding his arms across his chest. “Then

what makes him so damn special?”

A thoughtful grin touched Titus’s lips as he lifted his glass

again.
